Major

Preparation for the Major

  1. Environmental Sciences 100.  (3 units)  These courses are designed to give you a basic introduction to environmental science concepts that will be useful for the rest of the major.

    Alternative path: (6 units)
    Take Oceanography 100 plus one of the following courses: Geological Sciences 100, 104, 205; or Geography 104. 
  • Recommended but not required:  Finishing these courses early in your program give you useful background, and will help you meet some of the pre-requisites for courses within the major.
    • a college biology course
    • completion of General Education Foundations II.A. Natural Sciences and Quantitative Reasoning
    • completion of General Education Foundations II.C. Humanities

Language Requirement

This is the minimum foreign language requirement for graduation with a B.A. from SDSU.  (9 units, or equivalent)

Complete 3 semesters (or 5 quarters) of one foreign language.

Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement

This is the minimum writing requirement for graduation with a B.A. from SDSU.  (a test or 3 units)

Option 1: Pass the Writing Proficiency Assessment with a score of 10 or above.

Option 2: Take on of the approved upper division writing courses (marked with a "W" in the catalog), and earn a grade of C or better.

The Major (33 upper division units)

  • Required core (9 units): Biology 315, History 441, Philosophy 332
  • Interdisciplinary requirements (9 units):  Take one course from Field A, Humanities, one from Field B, Social Sciences, and one from Field C, Natural Sciences.
  • Required Concentration (15 units): Courses taken for the interdisciplinary requirement MAY be used for your concentration. For more information please see the Concentration Page

    Option a: Take 5 upper division courses (15 units) in a single department.  (Note:  only Geography and Biology currently offer 5 or more courses)

    Option b: Take 5 upper division courses (15 units) that share a single, interdisciplinary focus.  You are encouraged to create your own focus, but if you do, you must get the advisor's approval of it before you start your senior year.  See Interdisciplinary Concentration form and instructions.
